Vacation time is one of the benefits potential employees consider when making employment decisions. In fact, for Generation Y, flex time and paid time off rank above compensation.
So what things should companies consider when granting time off?
It is important that companies balance the rights of the employer with the rights of the employee to have a life.
The reality is that people get sick, kids get sick, and dogs get sick. It is unrealistic to think people are never going to miss work.
The problem comes in because managers don’t want to say, “No, you can’t have that day off,” when an employee requests a day off that will cause hardship on the company, so companies often create blanket policies that are unrealistic. There is nothing wrong with saying no, and the manager can say, “No. We need all hands on deck.”
